Memorial Day Cox Training

By Marcel Dejean

Village Community Boathouse held its spring Coxswain Training today, May 27th. The rain held off for the morning, so all the trainees got their turns at the helm, practicing steering and docking. Afterwards, while the skies opened up I blabbed on about crew management, tides, weather, and all that.

Remember that coxswain training is just the first step in a long process of learning. Our new coxswains will take the lead on boats, giving commands and making decisions, but with more experienced hands keeping a close watch and providing guidance.

A big thank you to my on-water trainers: Michael Anton, Andrew Leung, Lee Berman, Deborah Clearman, Sally Curtis, Jason Wan, Ryan, David, and Michelle. It all couldn't have been done without many assistants. Thank you Vivek for helping grade tests, Sally and Deborah for getting the pizza, and Sion, Eva, Austin, and Preston for helping us get on the water quickly in the morning.
